Parent Leadership Program

Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors

“You are your child’s first teacher, your home, their first school.”

This program is delivered in Spanish on Zoom.

This program is provided in partnership with the Ojai Adult School.

“After attending the Secure Beginnings program, I feel more confident as a mom about how I can advocate for my son’s needs, and I have also learned the ways in which I can help my son in his learning and intellectual and emotional development. I loved hearing the experiences of other Latina moms and I always felt safe sharing my experiences and concerns in this space. Thank you for everything.”

~Abriendo Puertas Program Participant

Abriendo Puertas / Opening Doors is the nation’s first evidence-based comprehensive training program developed by and for Latino parents with children ages 0-5.

Parent input informs the Abriendo Puertas / Opening Doors curriculum, which uses the popular education approach to engage parents in lessons that reflect the culture content, music, games, and family sayings. The interactive sessions draw from real-life experiences, incorporate data about local schools and communities, and focus on helping parents understand their important role in the development of and long-term impact on their children’s educational outcomes.

The mission of this program is to support parents as leaders of their families and as their child’s first and most influential teacher in a home that is their child’s first school.

The curriculum uses a two-generation approach that builds parent leadership skills and knowledge to promote family wellbeing and positive outcomes for children.

Secure Beginnings and Abriendo Puertas believe that parents, as leaders of their families, can be powerful agents of change in the lives of their children as well as their community.
